POW Life Cycle Perspective

The workflow of bombyx-hive integration © ETH Zürich

This work package focuses on the life cycle analysis (LCA) of PV systems and BIPV facade constructions. On the one hand, it is a zoom-in into the technology which will be decomposed into its individual parts to study their individual contribution on various environmental impact indicators, such as Global Warming Potential (GWP) or Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Furthermore, supply chains and material flows of PV systems will be investigated in order to identify the most significant potentials to improve their environmental performance. This will include an expansion of the analysis to a dynamic (time) resolution, as the power grid is a major influencing factor in the LCA of PV and in itself is subject to significant dynamics. Finally, this WP will apply the findings on a systems and materials level for low-impact BIPV facade designs and urban studies.
