Illias is a senior researcher at the Chair of Architecture and Building Systems (A/S), where he supervises and guides PhD and postdoctoral researchers working on different research projects and coordinates and contributes to the teaching program. He is key point of contact for teaching for other ETH chairs, staff and students.
Illias holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering (2008) and a PhD (2011), both from ETH Zurich. For his work in the field of solar thermal power he received the «swiss electric research award 2011». 2012-2013 he worked as a Project Manager R&D at Hitachi Zosen Inova, a global leader in energy from waste technology. In 2014 he received an SNF Advanced Postdoc.Mobility fellowship and joined the University of Colorado in Boulder, USA, as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department to lead the developments of a novel hybrid solar/electric reactor and a high-flux solar simulator. In 2016, he joined the A/S Group at the Institute of Technology in Architecture at ETH Zurich to work in the context of Building Integrated Hybrid Photovoltaic-Thermal Collectors.
Illias’ expertise is applying fundamental energy conversion concepts in the field of solar engineering and buildings. He is experienced in performing experimental research as well as conducting numerical analyses. His research and teaching interests include fundamental, applied and system level technologies related to energy demand, supply and climate control of a sustainable built environment.
