Maximilian (he/him) is currently a doctoral researcher focusing on densification concepts within existing buildings. His research, funded by Innosuisse and the city of Zurich, investigates the potential for vertical extensions and the suitability of these concepts from energy, socio-economic, ecological, and structural perspectives. The project is conducted in close collaboration with authorities, property owner representatives, and research partners, including the Spatial Development and Urban Policy group, the Chair of Structural Design, and the Transdisciplinarity Lab.
He previously studied architecture at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and completed a Master’s in Integrated Building Systems at ETH Zurich, an interdisciplinary program that combines architecture, environmental engineering, and socio-economics with a strong focus on sustainability and the environmental impact of buildings. During his studies, he gained experience working at various architecture firms, sustainability consulting companies, and research institutions. In 2022-2023, Maximilian was involved in the Future Cities Laboratory in Zurich and Singapore, where he focused on solar energy potential and the development of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) prototypes. His research particularly concentrated on Housing & Development Board (HDB) typologies and included engagement with authorities and various stakeholders in Singapore.
