Presentation at the Centre for Liveable Cities in Singapore by Prof. Dr. Arno Schlueter, August 2023

Held on 17 August 2023, Prof. Dr. Arno Schlueter spoke at the recent Centre for Liveable Cities Lecture Series on the theme of Systemic Design for Decarbonizing Buildings and Cities.

The lecture explored the systemic design of buildings and cities to achieve low carbon emissions, high energy performance and liveability. This was illustrated through the application of methods and the practical implementation of systemic design principles in living labs such as the “High Performance – Low Emissions” (HiLo) unit at NEST in Switzerland.

The HiLo unit exemplifies the integration of lightweight structures and innovative energy systems. For example, the adaptive solar facade of the HiLo unit would manage opposing concerns such as light, shade and privacy and respond to the personal requirements of users of the space over time. Notably, it helps to optimise electricity production and reduces energy loss. Dr Schlueter also highlighted the need for balance between architectural, energy, aesthetics, and other considerations such as the use of new technology.

The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session moderated by Mr. Tan Chee Kiat, Group Director (Engineering) at JTC, covering how such technologies and processes can be applied in the Singapore context.
