Dr. Sarah Crosby is the managing director of the Zero Carbon Building Systems Lab at the Chair of Architecture and Building Systems at ETH Zürich. Before joining ETH, she was a postdoctoral research scientist at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where she led an EU-funded project focused on low-carbon retrofits for European residential and heritage buildings. Addressing key challenges such as energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and occupants’ health and comfort, all while maintaining a human-centric approach to building design and renovation. Dr. Crosby received her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, where she also worked as a researcher at the Building Decisions Research Group. Specialising in building thermophysics, ventilation, and indoor environmental design conditions, Dr. Crosby explores the intricate relationships between these domains. Her research advances novel methods to enhance building environments, improve occupants’ thermal comfort, and mitigate building energy consumption. Dr. Crosby is the recipient of several academic and research awards, such as the Best Paper Award from Elsevier’s Journal of Building and Environment, UBC’s President’s Academic Excellence Award, and the Graduate Award in Population Health and Engineering from UBC.
